The official allegedly demanded bribes from a Pakistani man only to later order his deportation, the Sowetan reported.
Salman Hamid was married to a South African woman and the couple had a child, but he was detained at the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Gauteng until his lawyer managed to secure his release on September 15.
He thereafter opened a case of corruption against the official at the Polokwane police station on Monday.
Hamid reportedly said he was forced to deposit money into the official's bank account to ensure his stay in the country.
The daily reported it was in possession of a copy of the deposit slip.
Hamid said he was made to pay between R5 000 and R20 000 despite possessing legal documents, the Sowetan reported.
"I had paid a lot of money to that man to let him get off my back and only to be treated like dirt. I want him to suffer the consequences."
The Sowetan printed the story two months ago and were promised by the department that the matter would be investigated.
Polokwane police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed on Wednesday that they were investigating the matter.
"Whoever may be found to be involved would be placed where he or she belongs - in jail," said Ngoepe.
